  1. The following is the original text included with the PostScipt version of
  2. this font.  The font itself was downloaded from the cix fonts/postscript
  3. conference and converted to CG format using FontManager v1.1.  I have
  4. successfully tested it with ProPage v4.  There may be a few characters that
  5. produce strange results when printed, but where possible I have not included
  6. these fonts in any upload.

  13. Strongman and Strongman Bold by Richard M. Coda

  17. Strongman and Strongman Bold are based on two old engraving fonts 
  18.  
  19. called Strongly 3 Line and Strongly 5 Line. The significance of 
  20.  
  21. the "Lines" is that the weight of the font was controlled by how 
  22.  
  23. many "lines" were used to draw it - the more lines, the bolder the 
  24.  
  25. font.

  29. Strongman was scanned in directly from an old steel Panograph 
  30.  
  31. engraving plate. These are the masters that were used to create 
  32.  
  33. engraved dies for printing on engraving presses (this is the way 
  34.  
  35. it was done 100 years ago). From these dies fine engraved stationery 
  36.  
  37. was produced. Strongman was then produced using ZSoft's Publisher's 
  38.  
  39. TypeFoundry and SoftType.

  43. Strongman Bold could have been done the same way but it is very time 
  44.  
  45. consuming (and a P.I.T.A!). And besides, the scanned images that result 
  46.  
  47. from these Panograph plates are horrible and require a great deal of 
  48.  
  49. cleaning up. I chose, however, to try CorelDraw for the bold version. 
  50.  
  51. I made a .WFN font out of Strongman and typed in the character set. Then 
  52.  
  53. I beefed it up with the pen tool. I tried converting this directly to a 
  54.  
  55. .WFN, but it didn't include the pen weight information, resulting in a 
  56.  
  57. clone of Strongman. So, I exported the file to a .PCX file and went 
  58.  
  59. through the entire process again. This time however, I didn't have to 
  60.  
  61. scan the plate in, and the resulting .PCX file was super clean. The 
  62.  
  63. straight letters were perfect. All letters with curves had to be touched 
  64.  
  65. up, but I created a master curve and popped it in where it was required. 
  66.  
  67. And that is the history of Strongman and Strongman Bold!

  71. These fonts are good for display, legal stationery, or anything you might 
  72.  
  73. need and "old" feel for. A Corel .WFN version is included for each font.

  79. your friends with all 7 files intact (.TXT, .PFB, .PFM and .WFN). Please
